The new installation, which is part of Brookfield’s arts program, features an undulating canopy of 650 LED color-changing cubes, each suspended from a uni-strut frame above, that float through the Winter Garden Atrium like a magic carpet of light. Architect David Rockwell, who was commissioned for the project, was inspired by the shapes and colors of the lanterns found in the lighting festivals he witnessed as a child when his family lived in Mexico.

Visitors can interact with the lights by making a wish at one of three wishing stations located in the atrium. Once guests make a wish, which translates into a donation to the Grammy Foundation, the canopy changes color in tune with the particular color sequence at the moment. There are four color palettes–purple, blue, green, and red/orange—that change four times per hour.

Rockwell titled the piece, Luminaries, so that as each guest makes a wish they can feel like a star this holiday season. Luminaries is on view through Jan. 10, 2016.
