Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed today that the internet giant plans to build its first wholly owned and designed campus outside of the United States. Following the lead of past projects that the California company has commissioned, such as its Moutain View, Calif., headquarters, the site will be designed by the team of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and London–based Heatherwick Studio in the King’s Cross neighborhood of London—an inner city area. According to BIG’s press release, the new campus will be over 1 million square feet and house 7,000 employees across three offices.
Although designs for the King's Cross campus have not been unveiled, above is a rendering for the Mountain View, Calif., location to get an idea of what it may look like.
The building, which has yet to be unveiled, is expected to complement the 67-acre campus in King’s Cross Estate, an area that saw a wave of regeneration in the 1990s. In addition to the new building slated for the site, the company will also take over the recently occupied 380,000-square-foot development at 6 Pancras Square. Construction on second building Google will lease began earlier this year, and is set to be completed by 2018.
