Project Description

Recognizing the need for improved health outcomes across the state, the University of Nevada School of Medicine (SOM) secured state funding to construct the Center for Molecular Medicine. The first project constructed at the SOM in over thirty years, this translational research facility expands the University’s research capabilities into cancer and other diseases. The center will be an advanced technology resource for northern Nevada in attracting biotech industries while expanding the state’s scientific workforce that is needed for private sector investment.

The facility is comprised of two major components, a biological research laboratory building connected to a clinical office building. The laboratory building contains three levels of wet labs with researcher office suites and a lower level vivarium. The medical office building provides the main entrance to the complex, general classrooms, a 100-seat auditorium, and clinical and administrative office space. A key goal of the project was to provide connectivity on the campus to facilitate collaboration between researchers in both the new and existing laboratories and the clinical staff of the medical offices.

This project began with an extensive visioning process including researchers, faculty, and SOM administration, Facility Programming, site analysis and site design, functional planning, and an integrated design process involving all disciplines.
