Project Description
Our concept for the Yangjaegogae Eco Bridge is derived from nature’s ability and tenacity to symbiotically merge itself into landscapes, rivers, and mountains, while still creating unique and beautiful features that stand out. We wanted the bridge to both blend itself into the existing landscape but still have a unique appearance that anyone could recognize. The bridge does not try to pretend to disappear but instead embraces both its function and form while still interweaving itself with the two natural mountains it connects.
The main goal of this bridge is twofold. First to allow wildlife to cross the roadway freely and safely without any barriers and help reduce the segregation of species. The second is to connect the trails from both Mt. Umyoen and the Maljukgeori Neighborhood park for hikers and travelers alike. Our goal was to integrate both wildlife and pedestrians on the bridge as if they were in the mountains or forest. Unable to tell the difference apart. Creating a sort of new floating ecosystem thriving with both fauna and flora.
Our form was derived by both the function to cross the gap between both mountains and the tension that exists between them. The bridge appears to be both pulling them together while also holding them back. With the strict requirement to avoid piers, the arch was the obvious choice for structural integrity, constructability, and its inherent beauty.
