The American Institute of Architects, California (AIACA) has announced the results of its ninth annual Architecture at Zero competition, selecting three professional winners and four student winners from an international pool of net-zero energy (NZE) building designs. This year’s competition—which awarded up to a total of $25,000 in prize money—aimed to “generate new, innovative ideas for [NZE] construction to help achieve California’s goal for all new residential construction to be ZNE by 2020 and all new commercial construction to be [NZE] by 2030,” according to a press release from AIACA.
“The American Institute of Architects, California has been excited to collaborate on this important initiative that affirms the role of architects in leading efforts to use design to curtail climate change,” said AIACA president Debra A Gerod, FAIA, in the same release.
The jury for this year’s competition comprised Paul Torcellini, principal engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory; Gregg Ander, president of Gregg D. Ander; Allison Williams, FAIA; Cole Roberts, of ARUP; and Marsha Maytum, FAIA, founding principal at Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects in San Francisco.
