The pavilion that Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) designed for London’s Serpentine Galleries back in 2016 will eventually take up residence at a mixed-use tower in Vancouver, British Columbia, but it is first opening next month in Toronto. Purchased by Canadian real estate developer Westbank, the pavilion is currently under construction beside BIG’s and Westbank’s project King Street West. The pavilion will be open to the public from September through November 2018.
“Westbank has a well established and growing relationship with Bjarke and his team at BIG,” said Westbank founder Ian Gillespie in a description on Westbank’s website. “Purchasing the Pavilion was a very natural extension of that partnership and we want to give Bjarke’s creation the most interesting afterlife of any of the previous pavilions.”
The pavilion will eventually find its permanent home beside Westbank’s Shaw Tower, designed by James KM Cheng Architects, in Vancouver, but before it does, Westbank plans to display the pavilion in other cities, although definite plans have not been announced yet.
