On Wednesday, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston broke ground on the Nancy and Rich Kinder building—the latest project by New York City–based Steven Holl Architects on the museum’s campus.

Joining the firm’s nearby under-construction Glassell School of Art project—scheduled to be completed by next January—the Kinder building will house gallery space for modern and contemporary art and a 200-seat theater, as well as a café and restaurant. Wrapped in translucent glass tubes, the building’s form is inspired by clouds: “The Texas sky opens 180° overhead above a luminous canopy covering the new building. Concave curves, imagined from cloud circles, push down on the roof geometry, allowing natural light to slip in with precise measure and quality, perfect for top-lit galleries,” the firm notes in a press release.
