AIA Names Winners of 2021 AIA/AAH Healthcare Design Awards

The AIA Academy of Architecture for Health has selected six projects that address social needs and integrate sustainability goals.

The American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Health has announced the winners of its 2021 AIA/AAH Healthcare Design Awards recognizing six projects that “help solve aesthetic, civic, urban and social problems while also being functional and sustainable,” according to an AIA press release.

This year’s winners were selected in two of six categories: built projects with a construction cost under $25 million; and built projects with a construction cost more than $25 million. Winners were not selected in the remaining categories: renovations or remodels (projects built within existing hospital or clinical space or adaptive reuse of an existing building to a health care use); unbuilt projects; built and unbuilt innovations in planning and design research; and master planning urban design for health care settings.

The jury for the 2021 Healthcare Design Awards comprised chair Thomas J. Trenolone, AIA, HDR in Omaha, Neb.; David Allison, FAIA, Clemson University in South Carolina; Betsy Beaman, AIA, Goat Design in Atlanta; Windom Kimsey, FAIA, TSK Architects in Henderson, Nev.; Noah Tolson, Array Architects in Philadelphia; Norio Tsuchiya, AIA, TriArc Architecture and Design in Phoenix; Kirsten Waltz, AIA, Baystate Health in Glastonbury, Conn.
