London-based Grimshaw, Haptic Architects, and Oslo, Norway–based Nordic Office of Architecture released updated images for the entire design scheme of the Istanbul Grand Airport. Back in April the firms initially announced plans for the terminal, with images of the interiors, but these updated recent images add an aerial view and specify the total size of the project.Assisted by local Turkish Partners GMW Mimarlik and Tekeli Sisa, this new development will replace the existing Ataturk Airport. Situated on the coast of the Black Sea, about 20 miles outside of city-center Istanbul, the entire project will span over four phases. The first phase, which will open in 2018, calls for 90 million passengers per year with three runways. Once the entire project is complete—with no timeline released yet—it will rise to 150 million passengers and a final six runways. Master planned by London-based engineering firm Arup, the finished development will span a gross floor area close to 1 million square meters (10,763,910 square feet), making it the world’s largest airport terminal under one roof, according to Nordic Office of Architecture.
