Apple's existing Austin facility can accommodate 6,200 people, and is its largest footprint outside Cupertino, Calif.

Less than a year after revealing plans for $30 billion investment in the U.S., that would include the construction of a second campus, Apple announced yesterday that it will build that second campus in North Austin, Texas. The $1 billion campus will ultimately accommodate up to 15,000 employees. The new site will be located less than a mile from Apple’s existing offices and will occupy 133 acres, 50 of which will be preserved for open space.

“Apple is proud to bring new investment, jobs, and opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in the release. “Talent, creativity and tomorrow’s breakthrough ideas aren’t limited by region or zip code, and, with this new expansion, we’re redoubling our commitment to cultivating the high-tech sector and workforce nationwide.”

In addition to the new Texas campus, Apple revealed plans to develop new outposts in Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City, Calif., and to expand existing sites in Pittsburgh, New York, and Boulder, Colo., over the next three years.

This announcement comes just one month after fellow tech giant Amazon named two locations for its highly contested and much-hyped secondary headquarters. Cook reportedly took a dig at Amazon’s controversial courting process earlier this year during an interview with ABC News about Apple’s new site. “We wanted to narrow [down our site selection to] … prevent this auction kind of process that we want to stay out of.”

Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters was designed by Foster + Partners and officially opened in 2017.
