This is the second of four episodes in ArchitectChats’ “Dissecting the Code” series examining the intricacies surrounding a topic that every architect needs to know: building codes. Listen to the first episode in this series, “Raising Expectations,” here.

Most states require commercial construction projects to meet some standard for a baseline energy performance. Two of those baselines that are commonly referenced are ASHRAE 90.1: Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). But beyond the acronyms, what do architects need to know and understand about these standards, and how they relate to one another?

In this episode of ArchitectChats, Kim Shinn, principal and senior sustainability wizard in the Nashville office of TLC Engineering for Architecture, and Maureen Guttman, AIA, president of the Building Codes Assistance Project in Washington, D.C., identify the key takeaways about energy codes for all architects.

Episode 12: Dissecting the Code, Part 2 – Energy Essentials for Designers, featuring Maureen Guttman, AIA, and Kim Shinn, is also available on SoundCloud and iTunes.
