Project Description
Nestled on a sloping thirty-two acre plot in California’s wine county, lies Becalm, a ridge top residence with spectacular curves that are reminiscent of a motionless sail. The house’s specific site was chosen to maximize air circulation while minimizing impact on the site and existing vegetation. From the start of the project, homeowners Ingrid and Troy wanted to thoroughly embrace their natural surroundings. The house engages the natural beauty of its setting creating a seamless indoor/outdoor space that captivates the rolling hills of Napa Valley. Spectacular 270° views are offered in every room, capturing the essence of the valley. Polished concrete flooring was selected to provide silhouette reflections of the surrounding trees, particularly the oak tree adjacent to the pool deck. Floor-to-ceiling operable glass panels cover over 80% of the southern facade to maximize ventilation, while encouraging the inside/outside feel that is characteristic to the house. In addition to the visual qualities of the valley, the openness of the house captures the aromas of the site. Invigorating hints of eucalyptus, rosemary, bay leaves and morning dew fill the home. The site is filled with lush California vegetation that was left virtually untouched. The house was located atop the hill to minimize the amount of earth and vegetation disturbed. The landscaping that was introduced are drought tolerant and regionally specific plants. With the quantity of lush greenery, the home is at a higher risk of being victim to a brush fire. This is addressed by the use of non-combustible exterior finishes and holding the brush line 100’ from the house. The house is also fully sprinklered and the pool can be used as a water source for fire control. Utilizing the path of the sun for passive solar design was another influence on the architecture. The glazed southern wall is oriented to maximize daylighting while shading devices are integrated into the facade to block the harsh summer light while allowing the sun to warm the house in the winter. The homeowners are early risers and enjoy beginning each day with the sunrise over the valley peeking into the master bedroom. The crisp morning light and scent of morning dew enter the house invigorating all within. The design of the curved walls is based on Ingrid’s favorite constellation, Orion. The geometry for the curves is based on Orion’s orientation and central points are based on the stars within the constellation. Rich terracotta and light stone offset and compliment each other to create natural warmth through a harmonious balance of opposites. This idea of opposites runs throughout the house: fire and ice, light and dark, modern and rustic, inside and outside. Inspired by the friendly clash between opposites, Becalm is a manifested balance of contrast with its distinctive materials, color palette, geometry, and transparency. The bold yet natural color palette articulates the homeowners’ passion for art and reflects the various hues of a Napa Valley sunset. Spacious transparent volumes, breathtaking views, and natural aroma provide an idealistic calm and peaceful retreat within the walls of this modern Tuscan farmhouse.
