Project Description

Builder’s Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist

This cabin-art studio is for an artist who lost her husband and shortly after the cabin they shared with their family for years burnt down. This home became a recovery project from those misfortunes. The new was built on the spot of the old which is the Eastern shore of Door County on Lake Michigan.

A working artist, Brogan needed a painting studio as well as bedrooms for her grown children when they visit. The house consists of two wings with opposed shed roofs that point to the glass walled entrance link that connects the studio to the main house. The plan is designed around a protected court which looks east to the lakeshore. The angled wings of the cabin and studio are all well lit from generous glazing and corridors lined with skylights. The sum of the structures has a modernist vocabulary but crafted in a gentile quality that is warm, healing and reflective of the client.
