Project Description
Located in the heart of Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood—long a point of entry for the Mexican American community—UrbanWorks’ design for The Resurrection Project’s Immigration Services Office provides a bright and welcoming environment for assisting new and recent arrivals to the United States. The facility revitalizes previous street front retail space as a series of open spaces that metaphorically represent their clients’ immigration journeys through evocative materials and finishes.
The reception area leads to meeting spaces with differentiated levels of privacy: four core offices, two semi-open offices, and seven open offices separated by lightweight acoustic felt dividers. Deeply textured wood defines the visitor’s path through the spaces, representing the passage of immigrants through challenging terrain. Complementary green accents create places of tranquility and repose. Support spaces include a training room, updated restrooms, kitchenette, and workroom.
UrbanWorks’ thoughtful design allows The Resurrection Projects’ staff to provide client services within an environment that physically mitigates the fraught process of immigration.
