Project Description

A young couple wanted to renovate a kitchen in their newly purchased 1974 home to inspire new life for future renovations. At the first meeting, the client said, “The kitchen is dated and not very open.” The objective was to provide a new kitchen that would provide more natural light, be more artistic and more functional, retain the existing brick floors, and inspire future renovations. The home had only one owner until the young couple purchased it. The new design should be respectful to the existing house while breathing new life into a home that basically still exists as it was when it was first built. A wall was opened to the northeast that allowed more light and more visual connection the exterior, while the wall cabinets stopped short of the ceiling on one side to allow more openness throughout. Color was used to exaggerate the idea of natural light. On the other side, cabinets were enclosed to conceal clutter and provide contrast to the expansive open countertop. Alignments were made to frame views and add more connectivity to the rest of the home. The architect chose to do design/build in an attempt to keep quality control high and within the Owner’s budget.
