Project Description
This project consisted of a complete rip and remodel of a 1980’s master bathroom on the Newport coastline. Located in a unique 12’ diameter turret, the existing bathroom had been chopped up into several different spaces for shower, water closet, and elevated deck-mounted tub. Our designers opened up the space to take advantage of the ocean views while modernizing the layout. The vision for the design was to bring the outdoors, inside – especially when inside the shower. We enhanced the space with a sleek freestanding tub, pebble tiled shower with curved glass splash panel, custom vanity with polished nickel metal accents and relocated the water closet. Needless to say, designing and constructing a round room presented many challenges for our designers. From wall board to tile, to shower doors and windows, everything in this room needed careful consideration to detail. This was a unique space and the owners were willing to take the risks necessary to achieve the look they desired. 1. Tiles and wallboard – due to the shape of the room, all wallboard needed to be scored and tile needed special consideration when cutting. 2. Relocating water closet and plumbing – the layout of the room was completely altered to achieve a more open floor plan thus all the plumbing had to be relocated. 3. Shower doors vs. glass splash panel – originally, the shower was designed to have doors on either side of the shower, but we altered the design to provide a more open shower 4. Shower design – the area of the shower where the valve and shower head are located was originally supposed to be pebbles. Our designers recommended this area be tiled to complement the vanity. 5. Warmth of room – input from the homeowners was that this room had always seemed cold. We added heated floors and a toe kick heater under the vanity to provide more comfort. 6. Vanity design – the custom polished nickel metal inlays within the vanity drawers required a specialized metal craftsman. By removing the separate spaces for shower, water closet, and elevated deck-mounted tub, our designers opened up the room, creating a more inclusive design, while achieving the goal of bringing natural elements into the room. The curved glass splash panel not only provides a centerpiece for the room, but allows for a more natural, open shower design. The homeowners were elated with the exceptional elegance of their new master bath. The room now reflects the their eclectic style while showcasing the beauty of the ocean view. The combination of the round room and their desire to create a one-of-a-kind space provided a distinctive, functional oasis within their home.
