Project Description

The client wanted to update the entire master bedroom suite, which included the walk-in closet and bathroom. The husband's main focus was in the master bathroom and his wish list items were getting the largest marble tiled walk-in shower he could, along with a dedicated enclosed water closet room. The wife wanted to enlarge the walk-in closet and to create a vanity that looked more like a piece of furniture. We held a "design contest" of sorts, as to the overall master bathroom layout, since the husband wanted to try his hand at designing as well. So it made the process a lot more fun & creative, plus, it got the couple involved. They ended up choosing one of our designs, and in the end, they were the real winners…since they now have such a fantastic space! I think if it was up to the husband, the whole bathroom would have been a walk-in shower, so managing his expectations became a challenge. We certainly did not want to disappoint him or squash his dreams, so we took extra time to show him examples of past projects, marking the overall size before demo and showing him how we were squeezing every inch possible out of the space. From a construction stand point, we moved the toilet and shower to the opposite side of the room. We had to re-configure the entire plumbing system including drains, vents & water supplies. Part of the master bath was located over the garage which helped make it easier to figure out the layout of the drains and vents, however we now needed to build soffits in the garage ceiling and install a massive amount insulation which added to the cost of the project. The wife wanted a vanity cabinet that was not a "standard" item offered through the cabinet company. She wanted something that looked more like a piece of furniture. So after applying as many cabinet construction modifications as possible, the rest was custom built by our carpenter on site to create a truly unique vanity cabinet for the space. The wife's last request was a larger walk-in closet. We removed the wall that separated the closet from a sitting area and then built a new wall to section off the entire space from the actual bedroom area. This required moving electrical and some HVAC vents. In design, sometimes it's the little things that make the difference. We added functionality to the vanity cabinetry with adding roll-out trays at the bottom of each sink base cabinet and also added dividers to the drawers for make-up and toiletry items. Some additional things were adding a skylight for more natural light, adding a toe niche in the shower for shaving purposes; and most importantly for the wife, we doubled the available hanging space within the walk-in closet. We also added a door between the master bath & new master closet allowing the early morning riser to get ready without disturbing his partner. The natural marble throughout the entire shower is light, luxurious, and timeless, which sets the stage for the rest of the bedroom's furnishings. The clients' are thrilled to be back into a true master suite, which was designed for a King & Queen.
