Project Description

The design of the new Administration and Allied Health Facility is a visually dynamic addition to the University of Hawaii West Oahu. It consolidates office space for the campus leadership into a single location, while also providing general purpose classrooms and teaching labs for Microbiology, Cellular / Molecular, Anatomy / Physiology, and Organic Chemistry.
As the first phase of the University was influenced by historic sugar mills, the AAH/F is inspired by the additive nature of this building typology’s roof forms. Gable roofs define programmatic components within and create a facility with two identities located at THE entry to the campus. Similar to geometric patterning found on traditional Hawaiian textiles, a custom pattern was developed with concrete masonry units for the building skin.
Defined by the campus administration as a ‘Landmark Building,’ the architectural design is influenced by history, informed by site, and shaped by program. It aspires to create a variety of flexible workplace and learning environments that engage students, faculty, and staff.
