Project Description

Before renovation, this house had two very small kitchens. One for the house and one for the teenager/rec room – a converted garage. The goals of the project were to connect the kitchen better to the dining room, open it more to the real family room and make the rec room more useful by removing the second kitchen. A secondary goal was to provide a breakfast station for coffee and bagels that could be used without getting in the way of someone in the main kitchen work area. The opening to the dining room was widened and filled with sliding glass pocket doors. A new banquette was placed adjacent to the family room, opening the kitchen to the family room, separated only by the high back seating, in a cased opening. The breakfast station was treated as a separate piece of furniture, complete with refrigerator drawers, storage for coffee, plates, silverware and coffee maker, all hidden in the hutch like element. Flanking the doors to the dining room are two pieces of furniture that hide the oven and microwave as well as provide enormous storage. And of course the rec room was opened, dormer skylights added and connected more to the kitchen as well as the rest of the house with a hidden door into the dining room.
