Project Description
Remodeled in the 1980s (postmodern) this 1890s Victorian house, located in a historic district, had its front porch entirely rebuilt and a one story addition made to the back of the house. The 1980s addition included a new family room with two steps into the addition. At this time the Living Room and front parlor were combined into a single large awkward space and a second floor master suite was created. The project was to remodel the house for a young couple with two small children; to create an up to date kitchen and bathrooms that would be sympathetic to the period of the house; and to restore the exteriors to make them compatible with the original architectural elements of the Victorian House; and to open and interconnect the ground floor living areas. The one story family room addition was altered with new windows, doors, and exterior trim related to the original house. The family room floor level was raised to that of the kitchen to eliminate the two steps which the client felt were a tripping danger for their small children. Inside, the front parlor was recreated and the metal prefab fireplace that had been added in the corner of the living room was removed. The opening between the living room and the existing dining room was enlarged. The 1980s butler's pantry and the powder room were relocated. This allowed the kitchen to open directly to the dining room on one side and to the remodeled family room on the other, providing views through the house from front to back. On the second floor the master suite was reconfigured and the all the bathrooms were redone.
