Project Description

A ranch-style house in Los Angeles is reimagined as a light-filled contemporary home.

The clients approached us with a request to transform an existing modest one-story ranch style house with questionable aesthetics into an inviting stylish home that can comfortably accommodate a large family and provide plenty of indoor and outdoor areas for relaxation and entertainment.
Working within the existing footprint of the house, we redesigned the entire chaotic first floor layout to make it functional and rational. We were able to open up the existing cramped and awkward interior spaces, raise the ceiling height and allow natural light deep into the core of the house. A new covered patio helps merge the indoor areas with the serene rear yard while providing space for outdoor entertainment. The added second story houses the bedroom suites and a spacious deck overlooking the rear yard and pool.
A calm palette of natural materials and finishes was picked for both the interior spaces and the exterior. We looked into the casual Coastal Cottage style as a way to introduce modern aesthetics into the traditional character of the existing neighborhood. Typical elements of the style were carefully studied and reimagined to add modern vibes to the look of the house – wide board exterior siding, bright white siding and trims, contrasting standing seam metal roofing and thin profile dark bronze windows. The end result is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional family home that fits comfortably into its surroundings.
