An addition to a home should always complement the existing aesthetic of the home. For this addition, the client not only wanted an additional living space that blended with the exterior living area, but also to change the style from mid-century to mission-revival. To accomplish this, the addition needed to be striking in design, and the existing home needed overhangs removed. The design would include a 544 square foot living room addition with new front entry, and a complete exterior façade remodel. Spanish visor roof tile accents and shaped parapets bring the mission revival style to life, along with a smooth stucco finish and reclaimed solid wood entry doors. Automatic retractable screens were also integrated into each arched door jamb to allow interior/exterior living. The previous main entry to the home was behind a fence and not visible from the street. This was reimagined to a grand entrance to the home through the radius-paved walkway and reclaimed wooden doors. Several challenges came to light when undertaking the project. First, the arched openings needed to house the motor for the integrated retractable screens. This was accomplished by providing an access panel on the interior side header. The screen tracks also needed to be installed before stucco on the exterior and interior drywall in order to "pocket" the tracks. Second, the existing overhangs were removed during the rainy season, forcing a carefully planned sequence of waterproofing and building of the parapet walls directly above the open exterior top plate. Finally, the exterior "thin brick" used to accent the arches were installed prior to stucco, and then the stucco was skillfully applied up to and over the bricks. This masonry semicircular arch gave the addition an old-world appearance, completing the transformation of this home's aesthetic, and improving the indoor-outdoor living experience.
