Hawaii is One of the Top Solar-Heated States, LawnStarter Says

About 34 out of 1,000 homes in Hawaii are solar-powered, survey says.

Out of the 307,703 homes surveyed in the Honolulu, HI area by LawnStarter, 10,449 use solar energy as their primary heating source, or about 34 out of every 1,000 homes.

Honolulu is one of the top metros in the U.S. for rooftop PV per capita, calculated for the Pacific Business Journal using data from the U.S. Census bureau), standing head and shoulders above Stockton, Calif., which has eight solar-heated homes out of every 1,000 homes. Phoenix, Albany, N.Y., and Denver are also on the list.

Solar-powered water heaters first became popular in Hawaii in the 1970s, and both these and later photovoltaic systems were supported in the state by tax incentives.
