Held in New York this Tuesday, the United Nations Climate Summit was visited by representatives from hundreds of countries, plus Leonardo DiCaprio, to discuss how countries will address climate change in the coming years. Countries made promises to take action to combat rising temperatures and sea levels through such mitigation tactics as increased efficiency and decreased carbon emissions. Here are promises from some of the big players:
US: Federal agencies are to begin including climate change and resiliency considerations in development programs and investments and the US will begin deploying experts to vulnerable nations to help them prepare for extreme weather events and other threats related to climate change.
Mexico: More than a third of the country’s electricity generation will come from renewables by 2018.
UK: Invest 4 billion pounds in climate finance and cut emissions 80% by 2050.
EU: Invest 14 billion Euros in public climate finance outside the EU and cut emissions by 40% of 1990 levels by 2030 and 80%-95% by 2050.
China: Cut 2005 carbon intensity level up to 45% by 2020 and double financial investment in South-South cooperation.
India: Double amount of electricity generation from wind and solar by 2020.
