The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) added nine new hazardous waste sites to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites. In addition, the EPA proposed including 10 additional sites. Superfund is a federal program that investigates and cleans up complex, uncontrolled, or abandoned hazardous waste sites. Since 1983, 1,661 sites have been listed and 359 of these have been cleaned up. Currently there are 62 proposed sites awaiting agency action.

Contaminants found at Superfund sites include arsenic, benzene, cadmium, chromium, copper, creosote, dichloroethene, lead, mercury, uranium, and zinc. Under the program, the EPA works to identify companies or people responsible for the contamination and requires them to conduct or pay for the clean-up.

The following sites have been added:

• Continental Cleaners, a former dry cleaners in Miami, Fla.

• Sauer Dump, an inactive dump in Dundalk, Md.

• Compass Plaza Well TCE, a contaminated ground-water plum in Rogersville, Mmo.

• Chemfax, a former manufacturing site of synthetic resins and waxes in Gulfport, Miss.

• Southeastern Wood Preserving, a former wood-treating operation in Canton, Miss.

• CTS of Asheville, a former electronic components manufacturing site in Asheville, N.C.

• Eighteen Mile Creek, a contaminated creek in Niagara County, N.Y.

• Metro Container Corporation, the site of a former drum recycler in Trainer, Pa.

• Corozal Well, a contaminated ground-water plume in Corozal, Puerto Rico.

The following 10 sites have been proposed for addition to the National Priorities List:

• Cedar Chemical Corporation, the site of a former chemical manufacturer in West Helena, Ark.;

• Fairfax St. Wood Treaters, a former wood-treating operation in Jacksonville, Fla.;

• Macon Naval Ordnance Plant, the site of a former ordnance manufacturer in Macon, Ga.;

• Bautsch-Gray Mine, a former lead and zinc mine in Galena, Ill.;

• EVR-Wood Treating/Evangeline Refining Company, the site of a former wood-treating operation in Jennings, La.;

• Holcomb Creosote Co., the site of a former wood treating operation in Yadkinville, N.C.;

• Orange Valley Regional Ground Water Contamination, a contaminated ground-water plume in Orange/West Orange, N.J.;

• Jackpile-Paguate Uranium Mine, a former uranium mine in Laguna Pueblo, N.M.;

• West Troy Contaminated Aquifer, a contaminated ground-water plume in Troy, Ohio; and

• Circle Court Ground Water Plume, a contaminated ground-water plume in Willow Park, Texas.
