“The lighting is almost Space Age and portrays the school’s mission.” —Juror Raymond Barberousse, Studio PGRB
Prominently positioned near the entrance of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s campus in Daytona Beach, Fla., the avian-inspired Mori Hosseini Student Union designed by Ikon.5 Architects creates an iconic identity for the university. Fisher Marantz Stone’s lighting design strategy accentuates the building’s steel and glass exterior and transparency of space to reinforce the concept of flight. Uplighting the winglike roof forms and struts creates the illusion that the 177,000-square-foot building is hovering above the ground.
Inside, the lighting design enhances the curvilinear spaces and the cosmological references to aviation and aerospace with abstract orbital and meteorlike arrangements of linear LED downlights and pendants. It also creates a series of identifiable program zones and activity areas within a flexible plan without the need for walls.
A triple-height commons integrates the collaborative environments. The university library sits under a 200-foot arching skylight, while a second-floor roof terrace invites students to gaze down the runways of Daytona International Airport to rocket launches from Cape Canaveral.
